When it comes to the hip-hop industry or music in general, consistency in quality is vital, while also having variety in the sound of a record. In Travis Scott’s album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight the consistency that he puts out becomes detrimental to the album.
Birds in the Trap starts out with the mood being set in the first 30 seconds of the introduction, “The Ends.” It is very easy to tell the mood of the song, and the album altogether is dark, brooding, and somewhat enigmatic.
While Scott’s forte is normally his vocals, it doesn’t mean it takes away from his lyrical presence throughout his verses, with clever lines such as, “20/20 vision, but I can’t see nobody,” and “Cookin’ on a tune, I been cheffin’ up instrumentals.”
I’m not trying to say that Travis Scott is some type of amazing poet, but he can spit a few lines that make you chuckle and have some type of appreciation, and while he has his good moments, this record can become a little too stereotypical.
One of the largest examples is the song “Way Back,” where Scott takes some of hip hop’s most known stereotypes, talking about sleeping with a Tec (referring to the Tec-9 pistol), stashing all the pills in his desk, and wearing a lot of chains on his neck.
While these are some of the most known and boring stereotypes of the hip-hop scene, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad song. It’s catchy with a killer hook, even though it’s talking about the dull subjects previously mentioned.
After the first two songs in this album, the album starts to decline in quality, accelerating faster and faster one track after another, especially with “Through the Late Night,” featuring Kid Cudi’s usual type of dull, moaning vocals that seem to stretch out the song much longer than it should.
Other shortcomings that are present and start to hurt this record are songs like “Beibs in the Trap,” “Coordinate,” and “Lose.”
Overall, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight wasn’t necessarily an awful album, just extremely disappointing, especially compared to Scott’s previous record, Rodeo.
