The Lady Raider Basketball team has kicked of their season with two wins.
The Raider’s defeated Clinton Prairie in their first home game of the season 71-50.
On Tuesday night the Lady Raider’s played their first game of the J&C Hoops Classic, defeating Central Catholic 58-56 with a buzzer beater shot made by senior, Maggie Shandrick.
John Laird is the new head coach of the girls’ basketball program.
He is already changing the culture of Harrison Girls’ Basketball.
“His style is hard, fast and with a purpose,” said senior Shailen Johnson.
The team begins every practice with what they call the “Dirt Thirty,” thirty minutes of straight conditioning.
“I can already tell a difference out on the court. We can keep up with our competition now and focus on the game and less on how tired we are,” said senior Maren McCarty.
Moving into a new conference is going to be tough for the Raiders but the team expects nothing less of the season.
“We really want to shock everyone we play. We want to shock the teams with how we play and shock the fans by winning J&C and sectionals because no one thinks we will,” said Johnson.
The Raiders return seniors, Shailen Johnson, Maggie Shandrick, Courtney Jacobsen, Ellie Snyder, Maren McCarty, Olivia Crooks and Lizzie Paschen.
Foreign exchange student Julia Santos is from Spain and will be an important senior factor for the Raiders this season.
“Julia is a very good ball handler and has a high basketball IQ,” said Lizzie Paschen.
With a 2-0 start on the season the team is looking forward to a successful season.
The Raiders play McCutecheon at McCutecheon on Friday, November 21st, at 7:30 pm for the second round of the J&C Hoops Classic.
