Raider Soccer Heads Into Sectionals Confident, But Cautious

Elias Laborin

The Harrison Raider boys soccer team finished a successful regular season against Benton Central last Thursday, closing the year the right way with a 12-0 victory over the Bison.

The team ended a regular season that began with high expectations 12-1-1, only losing to then-No. 1 Chesterton, before going 1-1 at the NCC Tournament, in which they were heavily favored.

Although the team didn’t reach  their goals at the NCC tournament, they know that the postseason games that really count are just beginning.

“We can’t let what happened in NCC happen at sectionals, so we’re all ready to play this time,” said senior defender Gerardo Vazquez.

Teammate and fellow senior Kyle Bugay agreed.

“I think after losing the tournament we can bounce back and potentially win sectionals and go on to make a run like we did last year,” Bugay said.

Sectional action continues this Saturday as the Raiders will take on a rival McCutcheon Maverick team they defeated in regular season play.

The Raiders know that a previous win doesn’t guarantee a victory in sectional play and that they have to remain focused.

Senior defender Jack Newton knows that there is room for confidence, but agrees that the Raiders have to be mentally prepared to compete.

“We’re confident, [but] we gotta stay focused,” Newton said.

Although the team will look to stay focused and ready for sectionals and regional action, the ultimate goal is a state berth for the team that has held opponents to only 11 goals in 17 games this season.
