Most high school athletes dream of getting the opportunity to compete past high school.
Harrison high jumper Adam Decker took a trip to Australia this summer for an international track and field competition.
“Team USA sent me a letter asking me to compete and represent the state of Indiana,” said Decker.
This trip abroad gives Decker a better look at harder and more intense competition outside of the United States.
The competition will prepare Decker for his next season on the Harrison track team.
“Any additional experience an athlete can get, especially in a specialty event like high jump, can give an athlete a lot of confidence going into their next season,” said Mr. Coffman, Decker’s coach. ”Just being around other jumpers and participating in all kinds of venues will be a great asset for Adam going into the 2017 season.”
While in Australia, Decker had many different experiences such as touring up the mountains and staying in apartments on the beach with other athletes.
“The experience was phenomenal,” Decker said. “We stayed in apartments along the beach called Surfers Paradise. We were able to see Brisbane and the Gold Coast while touring up in the mountains where we could see the Outback.”
This competition took track athletes from all around the world for one big event for them all to compete together.
Decker was one of those few athletes to be selected by team USA to go to this exclusive event.
“The opportunity to go to Australia and compete in this event was huge for me,” said Decker. “It really gives me a different look at competition outside of the USA.”
Decker looks forward to this next year of high jumping for Harrison high school after this unforgettable experience.
