Division 1 Soccer Athlete Also a Popular Cake Decorator

Rachael Lehman

Many may know her as the standout soccer player who has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue her soccer career at the University of North Alabama.

But Lexi DeCamp’s talents go beyond the soccer field.

DeCamp uses her artistic and baking talents to run a business called Cakes by Lex in which she decorates cakes, macaroons, meringues, and sugar cookies.

Most people were unaware that she had this ability until she started posting pictures of them on her Instagram and Twitter, showing off her skills.

“I was inspired by my grandma at a very young age,” DeCamp said.

Her grandmother owned her own bakery, where DeCamp spent time and learned the basics of decorating. She has taken it to her own level and has started making her own and selling them wherever she can.

Harrison English teacher Ms. Ann Hammons orders treats from DeCamp.

“Lexi’s products are top quality and personalized,” Hammons said. “The connection between baker and customer ensures great service.”

After noticing DeCamp’s Cakes By Lex Twitter account, Hammons scrolled through the timeline and noticed DeCamp’s talent.

Hammons has ordered several specialty treats, including cupcake-shaped cookies, a baseball/football-themed birthday cake, and a multi-colored, star-tipped cake.

“All beautiful and all delicious,” Hammons said.

There are many different ways to decorate these cakes. She does different designs depending on what people ask for.

She has made a wedding cake for one of her family friends. Also, she has made many birthday cakes for children, since her mom runs a daycare.

Making cakes for her friends that are signing to different colleges for sports has also been a specialty.

There are personal connections when she makes these cakes because she knows the people ordering and can really get an idea of what they want.

Sometimes, she also lets her friends make cakes with her. Teammate Eleanor Sammons has been a common customer and a best friend of DeCamp.

“Most of the time, people come to me with certain ideas and what they want incorporated into the cake so I take all of those ideas and try to put it into one cake,” DeCamp said.

DeCamp makes different kinds of sweets that are all very good. She also makes macaroons for many different occasions, including parties and graduations.

She now sells her products at the West Lafayette Farmer’s Market. Her tops sellers are macaroons and sugar cookies.

Otherwise, DeCamp utilizes her cakes_by_lex Twitter account and Instagram to advertise her products.

“Making cakes is my favorite thing, because decorating them in such a unique way is so fun for me,” DeCamp said.

What was your favorite class at Harrison?

"My favorite class is Mr. Klumpe’s class. I’ve had him for three years and he always brings life to math."

If you could change anything about the last four years, what would it be?

"I don’t think I would change anything, honestly. I have worked really hard throughout high school and I think it’s paid off. I feel like I’ve had the high school experience, I haven’t really missed out on anything, so I wouldn’t change a thing."

Describe your worst date high school experience.

“My worst high school experience was on the first day of freshmen year at lunch. I walked into the wrong bathroom. Luckily no one was in there. I just walked in because I think the boys and girls bathroom at that time were switched in color. So I’d just look for the pink. And it was pink, I kid you not. This is why girls go to the bathroom in pairs, they gotta look out for each other.”

What is your favorite memory from Harrison?

“There are so many. My favorite memory would have to be the incoming freshman dance that we do. Not even when I went to it. When we do it every year for student council. It’s for the freshmen coming next year, but it’s also for student council. We just get to have a little party with ourselves. It’s a great time every year.”

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

“I don’t want to offend anyone! I have two for different reasons. Them combined would be like, the perfect teacher. So there’s Mr. Klumpe who pushes you to do your best and doesn’t let up on you. Then there’s Mr. Powell who also pushes you to do your best, but he’s, no offense Klumpe, but he’s a lot funnier. He makes learning enjoyable.”

What will you miss about high school?

“I know this sounds nerdy, but I’ll miss my teachers here. For senior year, I had the best teachers, my schedule was awesome because I know in college they aren’t as relatable to students. I’ll miss smaller classes and being closer with everyone.”

What won’t you miss about high school?

“The school lunches. I liked it freshmen year, but by senior year I’m getting tired of the pasta and the gross spicy chicken. Ugh, It’s nasty. There’s no taste.”

What do you plan on doing after high school?

“I plan to go to Purdue University and major in Engineering, maybe Mechanical or Aerospace, with a Spanish minor.”

What is your favorite pre-game song?

“It's this Spanish song, I don’t know who sings it, but it’s a good pump-up song. It’s easy to understand, and it’s got a good beat to it. At gold we don’t have warm up music, so you put on your headphones. So everyone has different warm up songs.”

What is the most embarrassing moment that happened in a game or practice?

“I gave myself a concussion. Our coaches were yelling at us at volleyball one time because we kept letting the ball drop. So I went really hard for a ball and ran into a piece of equipment that puts the baseball nets up and I gave myself my first concussion.”

What is your favorite moment from the last four years playing your sport?

“It’s actually from golf, It’s when I got my first birdie. I hadn’t even playing a year yet, and so it was almost like a miracle. For me to even get a par was just a big deal because I wasn’t very good at it. The people I was playing with, I’d played with them before since they were my friends. So they already knew how we played, and so they were super excited when it happened, and it just made the moment even sweeter.”

Unbridled Enthusiasm for Harrison Equine Club

Olivia DeCrane

Students of Harrison High School may have recently seen posters promoting HEC.

HEC, or Harrison Equine Club, was founded by Mackenna Hale, along with Abby Deno, who are both freshmen, and Mariah Ellwood, who is a senior.

“I wanted to form an equine club so then all the horse crazy people could unite,” said Hale. “I have learned, in the short time that I have been at Harrison, that high school can be a little overwhelming, and it's very beneficial to be able to have a positive outlet that will take some of the stress away.”

“[Hale] shared her idea with a few of us who all board our horses at the same equestrian center. We wanted to gather Harrison Raiders who have an interest in horses. We all agreed to meet up and organize the club, and we all worked hard to make the idea of the club a reality,” says Ellwood.

Hale says the club’s main goal is to have fun and bring horse-lovers together, and no experience with horses is necessary to be a part of the club.

“We want to provide equine education opportunities along with community service,” said Hale.

For example, HEC has teamed up with a local therapeutic riding center that will offer volunteer hours for anyone interested.

Equine-assisted therapy has been gaining considerable attention lately.

That it not to say it is a new practice. The ancient Greeks often used equine therapy for people with incurable diseases.

While many professionals say it should be used along with, and not instead of, other therapies, it is helpful for disabled individuals with relaxation and gaining muscle tone, coordination, confidence, and well-being.

“When riding a horse, you two are a team and do everything together,” said Ellwood. “They can teach you everything there is to know about collaboration ‒ leadership, forgiveness, love, and so much more.”

Ellwood also mentions that the club plans to host fundraisers for equine rescues and other therapy facilities, including a possible appearance by a pony at future football games.

“There are many educational opportunities already lined up for next school year along with some fun equine themed outings,” says Hale.  “I will venture to say, the general population doesn’t realize how grand and how far reaching the equine community is in today’s society.”

“It is truly amazing the knowledge and opportunities available for individuals interested in horses.”

Most members of HEC do have experience with riding horses, and Hale herself has spent considerable time with them.

“I have been riding horses for almost nine years now, so everything horse-related comes pretty natural to me,” said Hale. “I started off just taking lessons with a trainer but then slowly progressed to horse ownership. I compete in eventing, and I truly love anything to do with horses.”

Ellwood was very adamant about her love for horses.

“They aren't often viewed like dogs or cats, as companion animals, because they are so large and are herding animals, but to me horses are more like a man's best soul mate rather than a man's best friend,” said Ellwood.

“Horses are capable of building strong connections with people. To trust such a large animal and for them to trust you back is something very special and rare.”

Riding horses can be intimidating ‒ they are incredibly powerful and can sometimes be unpredictable.

“Horses have also made me come to realize how precious time and life is,” Ellwood said. “Horses are often getting hurt. They are delicate beasts I guess you could say. Sometimes they have a simple accident in the pasture, and they will never be able to be ridden again. In fact, that scenario isn't very uncommon. Horses have taught me to cherish everything I have right now.”

If you have any interest in horses at all, Ellwood and Hale urge you to become a part of the Harrison Equine Club.

“Even if you have never touched a horse in your life, but want to learn and interact with horses, you are totally welcome,” says Hale.
